BPD at Stockholm World Water Week, 5-10 September, 2010World Water Week Logo

BPD is looking forward to exhibiting and co-hosting side events to debate topical issues at Stockholm World Water Week in September. BPD's events are:

1) Giving Voice to the ‘Silent Partner’: The Environment and its Role in Multi-stakeholder Partnerships

Date: Sunday 5th September Time: 12.45-13.45  Room: T5

Details: Environmental considerations are not usually directly represented within water and sanitation delivery partnerships. This event reviews the role of the environment as the ‘silent partner’ in partnership negotiations and will present findings from research by BPD and local researchers in Latin America, supported by IDRC. The interactive session will be an opportunity to debate how water quantity and quality issues impact on how partnerships are structured in developing countries.
Co-convenors: IDRC and Stockholm Environment Institute.

2) Small Town Water Supply and Sanitation: Sustainability and Scale-up in Asia and Africa

Date: Thursday 9th September Time: 12.45-13.45  Room: T5

Details: How can we learn from other sectors in shaping water and sanitation delivery in small towns? This interactive side event reports on a six-country study and gives participants the opportunity to refine emerging tools for small town interventions. A key goal is to recognise the individualities of each small town, while having impact at scale. Come and join the debate!

SANCOP (Sanitation Community of Practice) VI, April 2010

On 30th April 2010, BPD, IWA and WEDC brought together 30 participants from across the sector to consider the challenges of sanitation in fragile and conflict-affected states. The day began with presentations by representatives from DFID, WaterAid, Tearfund, LSHTM and Atkins, who reflected on their own extensive learning. The presentations provided stimulating material for later small group discussions on questions such as how sanitation can contribute to state building, relief versus development, politicizing sanitation and donor objectives. Please visit the link below for notes from the day's discussions.

Developing Partnerships in Practice (DPP) 8, June 2009

From 14th-19th June 2009, BPD and WaterAid Ghana facilitated a Developing Partnerships in Practice training course in Accra for practitioners working in water and sanitation multi-stakeholder partnerships in West Africa. It was a resounding success and BPD plans to hold another DPP course in the near future. More on DPP.

BPD Lab: Community-Level Water Conflict, June 2009

During a two-day research meeting in London on 11-12th June, participants discussed theory and practice regarding community- level water conflict. One of several outcomes was a triangle framework for assessing the contradictions, behaviours, and attitudes to conflict, which was later used in the DPP course in Ghana at the end of June. The BPD Labs bring together a diverse set of stakeholders through a revolving virtual process of generating new ideas and refining BPD's problem-solving approaches.

Sanitation Entrepreneurs Roundtable, April 2009

On 27-28th April 2009, BPD held a roundtable at its offices in London on the subject of small-scale sanitation entrepreneurs. Senior decision makers and practitioners in the water and sanitation sector and sanitation entrepreneurs from across Africa participated in stimulating discussions that broadened understanding and provided momentum for further research.
